2025-2028 NC Pre-K site selection process open

Alleghany County Schools NC PreK will conduct an open and competitive site selection process to seek three-year applications for the provision of NC Pre-K services for young children in the year prior to entering Kindergarten.  The time for services will be July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2028.  This site selection process is open to all eligible public and private childcare sites in Alleghany County, including 4 and 5-star and temporary license sites.  Prospective applicants should review the NC Pre-K Site Application: NC Pre-K Site Application and review the North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten (NC Pre-K) Program Requirements and Guidance linked here: North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten (NC Pre-K) Program Requirements and Guidance.pdf when completing their applications.

Completed applications will be received until 3:00 p.m. April 22, 2025

All prospective applicants should attend an Information Session on Monday, April 7, 2025 at 3:30 pm at Alleghany County Schools, Central Office Conference Room, 85 Peachtree St, Sparta, NC  28675.

Welcome to Pre-K! 

Alleghany County Schools offers preschool programs at all three elementary schools.  Our programs are designed to prepare young children for success in school.  Our pre-K teachers are all highly qualified to provide a developmentally appropriate education for preschool children.

  Eligibility:

  • Be four years old by August 31st of the enrollment year
  • Be a resident of Alleghany County

  And one of the following:

  • Meet the family size and income requirements set by the state of North Carolina
  • Be a child of an active military family (proof of active enlistment required)
  • Have an identified educational/developmental need

  How to Apply:

Screenings will be held on Wednesday, June 4th and Thursday, June 5th at Sparta Elementary School, 450 N. Main St, Sparta, NC  28675.                      

All applicants must submit the following documents with the completed application to Alleghany Board of Education:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Immunization Record
  • NC Health Assessment Transmittal Form completed by a doctor or Health Department, due within 30 days from the first day of school. 
  • Verification of income (Tax return or W2 preferred or four checkstubs from both parents/guardians)
  • Verification of physical address (ex. electric bill). A cell phone bill or PO Box cannot be accepted)
  • Insurance or Medicaid Card

  Parents will be called at the end of July notifying them if their child has or has not been accepted into the preschool program.
